The Highlands Opera Lovers program returns to normal on Tuesday 14 April at 5 pm at Annesley. International Theatre Director, Professor Gale Edwards, will share with Highlands Opera Lovers her experience directing theatre productions, operas, and musicals around the World. In an extensive career, Gale has directed Carmen and AIDA as Operas on the Harbour, Nixon in China for the Adelaide Festival, and La Boheme and Salome for Opera Australia.

Our Latest News

Highlands Opera Lovers has purchased a Bechstein concert grand piano.

Bechstein pianos are the choice of many of the major music halls of Europe and the United States. The piano is housed in the Annesley ballroom, and Annesley will keep it tuned. It will be insured against loss.

The purchase of this piano is a great opportunity for Highlands Opera Lovers moving forward. Already, at our last two events in 2025, it has greatly enhanced our listening pleasure and broadened the scope of our activities. And it will also be a wonderful acquisition for the community at large, providing HOL the opportunity to allow young musicians to perform locally, hopefully inspiring them to further their musical careers.

Highlands Opera Lovers currently is in the process of fundraising for the acquisition of the new piano, we are in touch with our Highlands Opera Lovers members.

Highlands Opera Lovers is  the opera appreciation group in the Southern Highlands. HOL provides members with an annual programme of events to satisfy and enhance their interest in opera. Membership of HOL is open to everybody with an interest in the operatic arts.

The Southern Highlands, referred to locally as the Highlands, is between 500m and 900m above sea level on the Great Dividing Range in New South Wales, Australia. The Southern Highlands is known for its cool temperate climate, and is within Wingecarribee, a coal mining free shire.

The Highlands lies half way between Opera Australia, based at the Sydney Opera House, and National Opera, based in Canberra.

New lovers of opera in the Highlands are always welcome to join HOL, and can join at any event, or Contact HOL.

Local Highlands identity Taryn Fiebig was a much-loved and highly regarded Australian soprano, who performed regularly for Opera Australia and Pinchgut Opera. Taryn died aged 49 in 2021.
